High temperature sublimation of α-amino acids: a realistic prebiotic process leading to large enantiomeric excess.

The reiterative high temperature co-sublimation of an enantiopure or an enantioenriched α-amino acid mixed with racemic α-amino acids leads to deracemization of the latter. A synergistic effect is observed for complex mixtures, and the sense of the handedness is, for all compounds, identical to that of the enantioenriched starting material.

Amino Acids in Comets and Meteorites: Stability under Gamma Radiation and Preservation of the Enantiomeric Excess

Amino acids in Solar System bodies may have played a key role in the chemistry that led to the origin of life on Earth. We present laboratory studies testing the stability of amino acids against γ radiation photolysis. All the 20 chiral amino acids in the levo form used in the proteins of the current terrestrial biochemistry have been irradiated in the solid state with γ radiation to a dose of ...

Enantioselective synthesis and enantiomeric amplification of amino acids under prebiotic conditions.

A plausible origin of biomolecular homochirality is advanced, where alpha-methyl amino acids found on meteorites transfer their chirality in the synthesis of normal amino acids. This asymmetry can be amplified to nearly homochiral levels, thus providing the necessary prerequisite for life to start on this planet and elsewhere in the universe.

Colour indicator for enantiomeric excess and assignment of the configuration of the major enantiomer of an amino acid ester.

A colour indicator for the full range of enantiomeric excess (-100%-->100% ee) is presented which is based on visual colour inspection of a liquid crystal doped with the analyte, i.e. the methyl ester of amino acid phenylglycine, providing the enantiomeric excess and allowing the assignment of the major enantiomer.

Sensing of enantiomeric excess in chiral carboxylic acids.

Cinchona alkaloids (quinine, quinidine, cinchonine, cinchonidine) alkylated at N(1) with chloromethyl anthracene can serve as fluorescent sensors for chiral carboxylic acids. These cinchona ammonium salts are shown to bind chiral carboxylic acids while displaying an increase in fluorescence intensity that can be utilized in determination of enantiomeric excess (ee). Sensor arrays composed of fo...
